Washington, D.C. – U.S. President Donald Trump has raised tariffs on Canadian imports to 35%, up from 25%, in retaliation for Canada’s plan to recognize Palestine as a sovereign state. The new tariff, enacted via executive order, took effect immediately on Friday, according to BBC Live.

Canada’s Move Triggers U.S. Backlash

The decision comes just days after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Ottawa would formally recognize Palestine during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly session in September.

Carney warned that the opportunity for a two-state solution was “rapidly vanishing” and confirmed he had consulted with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas before the declaration.

Trump’s Strong Rebuke

President Trump condemned Canada’s stance, stating:

“It will now be very difficult to negotiate any trade deal with Canada.”

He argued that the move undermined existing U.S.-Canada trade agreements and accused Ottawa of a “diplomatic breach.”

Escalating Tensions

The White House framed the tariff hike as a direct punitive measure, signaling a further deterioration in U.S.-Canada relations. Analysts warn the move could spark a broader trade dispute, impacting key industries on both sides of the border.

What’s Next?

With Canada set to proceed with its recognition of Palestine in September, the Trump administration’s response could include additional economic or diplomatic measures. Observers fear the rift may complicate ongoing NAFTA/USMCA negotiations.
